Sitting out on the patio enjoying beer and wings is something a little rarer than you would think here in Canton, Georgia. Most of the year it’s either too hot or too cold for it, so when we get those beautiful days when you can really enjoy the weather, you take advantage of them. February 20th was a warmer than average 73-degree day, so there I was enjoying the sun and a glass of Breckenridge 471 IPA Barrel Series Dry Hopped with Citra.
Breckenridge 471 IPA is an ongoing series of double/imperial IPAs brewed with varying hop varieties. The version I am enjoying today was released in January in bomber bottles and in kegs. I have not seen any of the bottles in Georgia. This is definitely a sipping brew, one best savored slowly to appreciate its fine nuances.
Breckenridge says:
Every batch of 471 IPA Barrel Series gets special attention. We rest our 471 Double IPA in whiskey barrels to soak up whiskey and woody character. We then move the beer from individual barrels back into a conditioning tank for a second dry hop treatment to be sure those hoppy aromas are noteworthy
Breckenridge 471 IPA Barrel Series Dry Hopped with Citra has an alcohol content of 11.3% by volume with 70 IBUs. I paid $6 for an 11-ounce glass at Taco Mac which seemed very reasonable.
My glass of Breckenridge 471 IPA Barrel Series Dry Hopped with Citra arrived a bright orange amber hue with a medium head of creamy foam and citrus, pine and oregano in the nose. Taking a sip, I got a solid caramel malt base, more grapefruit citrus and a hint of resin, a little wood, and a jet-fuel whisky alcohol burn in the dry bitter finish.
Breckenridge 471 IPA Barrel Series Dry Hopped with Citra is a tasty beer indeed, and again a sipping beer for sure. Don’t miss it, if you are lucky enough to find it.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
