Boulevard has another winter seasonal beer! The first holiday beer I enjoyed from this St. Louis, Missouri brewer was their lovely Nutcracker Ale, and I’m happy to say that Boulevard Snow & Tell Oak Aged Scotch Ale complements, rather than replaces, it. I bought my bottle of Snow & Tell in November of 2015, though I saved it for the second most wonderful time of the year: Christmas in July.
I will say that I love Scotch Ales and Scottish Ales, and though they call this a Scotch Ale (aka Wee Heavy), I think it’s really closer to a Scottish. The difference is that Scotch ales should be a little stronger and fuller in body than Snow & Tell is. Don’t worry though, it’s a decent beer all the same.
From the website:
A perfect winter beer for curling up by the fireplace, this malt blanket features prominent toffee and caramel notes with just a hint of smoked malt. A subtle spiciness is provided by hopping with Magnum, Chinook and Styrian Goldings.
Boulevard Snow & Tell Oak Aged Scotch Ale has an alcohol content of 6.3% by volume with 30 IBUs. It was running $8.99 a six-pack when I bought my bottle. That bottle is stamped as best by 3/14/16 (my birthday!), but I drank it on July 3rd 2016. I kept it refrigerated from November to July.
Boulevard Snow & Tell Oak Aged Scotch Ale pours to a dark mahogany color with a light creamy head of foam and a woody and caramel malty nose. Taking a sip, the beer is nutty and caramel malty up front with tasty treacle, a hint of peat and gently toasty oak. The beer finishes dry with a grassy herbal bitterness.
All in all, this is a tasty Scottish ale with nice malt character, a perfect beer I think for enjoying by the fireside on a cold winter’s night. It went equally well on a hot July afternoon as I imagined snow and brightly colored lights, and the beer intrigued me enough that I’m eager to try it again in its own proper season. I’ll be back with more details when I do.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
