Though I have had beers before from Boston Beer Works, I'm ashamed to say I have never actually been to the brewpub. That changed today when the wife wanted to take a ride to anywhere today, and we packed the kids in the car and headed north on 95. I knew of a few good liquor stores on Route 1, so we picked it up in Walpole and just headed north for a while. As luck would have it, the wife wanted to stop at a drugstore and as I turned down the side street, Boston Beer Works stared me in the face at the end of the street! It was destiny!
The brewpub is located directly across the street from Fenway Park, and the Bosox influence is apparent throughout the pub: the game with Toronto was on the television when I walked in, several of the beers had related names and Sox items could be spied here and there.
Since we had already (unfortunately) eaten, I can only comment on the beer, though my wife ordered the Boston Cream Pie which she assures me was quite delicious and more than she and the three kids could finish. Most of the beers showed very good English hop character, Goldings seem to be quite popular, and a solid malt backbone.
I ordered a sampler to start with, though a bit pricey ($5.50 for four four ounce samples), it's the best way to taste the entire line and maintain a fairly clear head, and with eleven beers to choose from (the most I've seen in a brewpub at one time), the sampler became a necessity.
Bunker Hill Blueberry Ale: This seems to be the signature beer for BBW, I ordered a twenty ounce glass of this one (all of the BBW glasses have a fill line that allows for the head), it was the perfect beer to round out the afternoon. This would make a great dessert beer, crisp, refreshing biscuity malt body is perfectly complemented by vibrant but not overpowering blueberry flavor, a generous dose of Maine blueberries are dropped into your glass. 4.0% ABV.
