What the hell is a Boojum? That’s what I want to know. It’s a brewery, for one thing, or you wouldn’t be here at bruguru.com reading this. A brewery in Waynesville, North Carolina, that opened in 2014. But what, matter of fact, is that brewery named for? Most likely the creature created by Lewis Carroll for his poem The Hunting of the Snark.
What the hell is a hootenanny? OK, now this one I know. I’ve heard this one before, it’s a generic term for whatever you want it to be, as in “Stop with all your hootenanny!” But how about a Hootin’ Annie? Well that’s clearly a play on hootenanny, but combine it with Boojum and you get Boojum Hootin’ Annie Apricot Wheat Ale, a beer I enjoyed at Harrah’s River Valley Casino. Harrah’s River Valley has recently expanded and added a new lounge and bar (two of them actually) with more draft craft than ever. You’re always a winner when that happens.
Boojum says about Hootin’ Annie:
Cool and refreshing with a pop of color, just like a sunset over the Blue Ridge Mountains. This light & drinkable American style Wheat Ale is brewed with plenty of wheat, juicy apricot & a touch of orange.
Boojum Hootin’ Annie Apricot Wheat Ale has an alcohol content of 5.5% by volume. It’s brewed with apricot, orange peel, wheat and is a June through September seasonal. I paid $4.67 for a pint at Harrah’s.
My cup of Boojum Hootin’ Annie Apricot Wheat Ale was hazy orange amber in color with a light filmy head and soft apricot fruit in the nose. Taking a sip, I got a tart very wheaty palate, more of the fruit and a quenching tart wheaty finish. A tasty enough beer for hot summer weather.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
