Bartender’s special! That’s what the sign called Boojum Graveyard Fields Blueberry Coffee Porter. This is a seasonal release by Boojum, one I assume is their fall offering though the name is not Halloween themed but refers to a local mountain trail. I was at Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino when I saw the sign at the bar and asked for one. The bartender tried to caution me about, as if I might not like it, warning only those that liked dark beer seemed to like it. Count me into that number.
Boojum says:
Desiring all things naturally bright and colorful, the Boojum frequents Graveyard Fields, a place in the mountains where wild berries grow. These days he must be careful & deliberate when he ventures out. Like the Boojum, we had to be careful when adding a bit of color to our Coffee Porter. First, we crafted a classic Brown Porter, then added fresh coffee & just a hint of blueberry to give balance and complexity to this rare brew.
Like most of the Boojum beers I’ve tried, hops are not the prominent attraction, and they don’t even mention the varieties used. Malt strikes back!
Ingredients from the website:
Malts: Roasted Barley, Coffee, Pale Chocolate, Special Roast
Specialty: Coffee, Blueberries
Boojum Graveyard Fields Blueberry Coffee Porter has an alcohol content of 5% by volume with 22 IBUs. I paid $5 for a pint, which includes tribal levy (sales tax essentially).
My cup of Boojum Graveyard Fields Blueberry Coffee Porter arrived jet black on color with a very light head of foam and coffee and fruit abundant in the nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a smooth malty palate, with robust coffee grinds and bright berry fruit, chocolate, and a dry roasty finish.
I enjoyed this very much, the bright berry fruit really popped again the dark coffee. This reminded me a bit of New England Coffee’s Blueberry blend, another type of brew of which I am very fond. I would absolutely buy this beer again. .
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
