Jacksonville, Florida has a brewery! At least one anyway, and I’m talking about Bold City Brewery. I got my first taste of their beer when I got a can of Bold City Mad Manatee India Pale Ale from my good buddy Tim Maclver. The T-Man knows his beer, and I’m in his debt for this fine can of Florida suds. Bold City beers are not to be found in Georgia, despite the fact that we border the sunshine state.
Bold City Mad Manatee IPA reminded me of a classic American IPA with its bright citrusy hop notes, while the grassy bitter finish recalled a classic English IPA. Perhaps a beer to enjoy during a Jaguars game? If so, more than one might be needed.
From the can label:
A wonderful balance of hops and malt, this IPA is loaded with four hop varieties. You can expect a slight sweetness with toasted notes, a wonderful floral aroma and crisp citrus finish. It’s as bitter as a MAD MANATEE!
Bold City Mad Manatee IPA has an alcohol content of 5% by volume with 60 IBUs. The alcohol content is a little low for an IPA. Total Wine sells the beer in Jacksonville for a very reasonable $8.99 a six-pack.
Bold City Mad Manatee IPA pours to a bright orange color with a thick creamy head and a juicy citrus and herbal hop nose. Taking a sip, the beer is full in body with caramel malt and bright orange citrus peel and pulp. A dry grassy bitterness emerges in the finish and lingers on the tongue sometime after sipping. Very tasty fusion of English and American hop character here, I really enjoyed this one and I’ll be on the lookout for more beers from this brewery.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
