Sometimes, it’s so much fun being a Bruguru. There I was at Taco Mac watching the Patriots on a fine Sunday afternoon. I ordered up a mug of Blue Moon Winter Wheat Spiced Abbey Ale and our server (a rookie) scampered off to get me one. Thing is, what he returned with was a mug of Blue Moon Belgian White Ale. Now a bad beer I think, but also not what I ordered. I sent him back for the right beer, and I overheard one of the more experienced bartenders telling him “You have to get John’s beer right, he will know if you bring him the wrong one.”
OK, so that was fun, but I really did want to try Blue Moon Winter Wheat Spiced Abbey Ale. I had seen it in 12-packs I think but didn’t want to buy that many without trial. So, a mug at Taco Mac suited my purpose. As I sipped, the beer immediately reminded me of Blue Moon Spiced Amber Ale which I had enjoyed many years ago (OK, well about 7).
Coors has no information on this beer on the Blue Moon page, but a distributor, Amoskeag Beverages in New Hampshire, has this information which one assumes is from Blue Moon:
Warm up to winter with Blue Moon’s special new seasonal beer, Winter Wheat. This spiced abbey ale is perfect to bring to any holiday occasion.
Blue Moon Winter Wheat Spiced Abbey Ale has an alcohol content of 5.9% by volume according to Taco mac, and I paid $6 for a 23-ounce mug at Taco Mac. Total Wine sells it for $10.99 a six-pack.
My mug of Blue Moon Winter Wheat Spiced Abbey Ale arrived a dep mahogany color with a thick fluffy white head and hotball cinnamon in the nose. Taking a sip, I got more of that in the palate which was the defining trait of the Spiced Amber Ale. There is light chocolate, caramel, a hint of clove, and a balanced bitter finish.
I’ll say this was quite tasty, the spices work well with the maltiness though I did not pick up a lot of wheat character. The draft price was reasonable, but the bottled price is about a buck or two higher than it should be. I’m also not getting the abbey connection. Still, I enjoyed this and would drink it again.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
