Do you like peaches? I can’t stand the bloody things. Rest assured, I love to eat them, sweet and luscious as they are with their delightful fruity flavor. I just can’t stand the fuzzy skins on them, and avoid fresh peaches like the plague as a result. Luckily, Blue Moon was kind enough to remove the skins when they made Blue Moon First Peach, a seasonal brew sold from January to March by Blue Moon.
Oddly enough Blue Moon First peach didn’t show up until May at Taco Mac, but it was fresh as a, well, freshly picked peach when it did. Blue Moon beers are eschewed by some beer geeks because the company is a division of Miller Coors, but I’ve always enjoyed them. Fruit beers also are often met with disdain, so Blue Moon First Peach may already have an uphill battle with some.
From the brewery website:
With one foot in winter and the other in spring, we crafted this Belgian-inspired Brown Ale with the first peaches of the season and coriander. It has a tart taste balanced by caramel malts for the cooler days and peach notes for the warmer ones.
Ingredients:
Malts: Imported Caramel Malt and Wheat
Blue Moon First Peach has an alcohol content of 5.6% by volume with 15 IBUs. I paid $5 for a 20-ounce mug at Taco Mac, and it sells for $8.49 a six-pack here in stores.
My mug of Blue Moon First Peach arrived a bright brown color with a thick head of lightly packed foam and light peach fruit in the nose. Taking a sip, I get soft cookie malts in the palate to set the stage for a beer bursting with juicy peach and a slightly tart, balancing finish.
Overall I found this beer to be just peachy. It’s a very good, if uncomplicated, beer at a great price. I love the way the soft cookie malts, robust peach fruit and tartness all work together. Yes, I would definitely drink this one again my friends.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
