Blue Moon Cappuccino Oatmeal Stout! I’ve been seeing it everywhere. Mostly in 12-packs of bottles at places like Target and Publix, but also I noticed that Taco Mac had it when I was looking at the Canton draft list online. I was going to try it there (I do like to give the big guys a chance after all), but before I made it to Taco Mac I picked up a single at Total Wine.
Blue Moon Cappuccino Oatmeal Stout is described on the bottle as a “Limited Release”, and I’ve only started seeing it late this fall. Blue Moon says about it on their website:
Our head brewmaster, Keith Villa, got the idea for this wintery ale while relaxing in a local coffee shop with a frothy cappuccino on a frosty afternoon. The fresh coffee aroma and rich roasted taste of our limited-release Cappuccino Oatmeal Stout is the perfect way to unwind and catch up with friends this winter.
Ingredients, also from the website:
Malts: Pale, Light Caramel, Carafa®, Oats
Hops: Taurus
Our Twist: Decaf coffee and cocoa
Blue Moon Cappuccino Oatmeal Stout has an alcohol content of 5.9% by volume with 10 IBUs. Target had it for $13.29 a 12-pack and Total Wine sells six-packs for $8.49.
Blue Moon Cappuccino Oatmeal Stout pours to a jet-black color with a medium creamy tan head and a soft coffee and grassy hop nose. Taking a sip, the beer is thin in body for an oatmeal stout, with smooth creaminess but less body than I want. There are light coffee notes but not the full richness of cappuccino, though a hint of caramel comes through.
Disappointing and thin and not enough coffee or roast to suggest a Cappuccino to me. The label says “brewed with decaf coffee and oats for a creamy mouthfeel”, but I did not find that to be the case. Would I buy it again? As a matter of fact, I’m going to Taco Mac today, and it’s still on draft, but it likely won’t be one of the beers I order.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
