The Blind Pig Brewing Company of Temecula, California, proudly proclaims on the label of this beer that it was the 1996 Gold Medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival in the Traditional English Style Bitter category. This obviously sets the expectations of the prospective drinker up a notch or two, and though I found this to be an enjoyable and readily quaffable brew, I'm not sure it lived up to my anticipations.
This beer is light caramel in color, with a bit of a malty nose but not much in the way of hop aroma. Carbonation was higher than might be expected for a bitter, and produced a robust head which quickly dissipated but did leave a bit of white foam atop the brew. A fine Brussels lace persisted until the glass was emptied. Flavor was on the light malt side with a touch of fruit and a light hop kiss in the finish. All in all, an enjoyable session beer.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
