St. Charles Porter

Review Date 3/17/2018    By John Staradumsky

Many years ago (I can’t remember when) I visited the Blackstone Brewing Company in Nashville, Tennessee. I thought I took notes on the beers I had there, but I can’t find them for the life of me. I did have their St. Charles Porter, however. This much is true. And here I am again enjoying it, this time a bottle at home.

Blackstone opened in 1994 and moved in 2011 and built a bigger brewery. I visited their original site. They don’t have any information on their beers on their website, but the label tells me the following:

·         This is a brown porter in style

·         5.8% alcohol by volume

·         3 IBUs

·         Best before date is notched as February 7th, 2018

Now, I bought my bottle at Wild Hare Beer Company in Spring Hill, Tennessee in mid-February. It was already about a month past freshness date when I bought it, and I drank it on March 3. It did not suffer from the extra month or so. It was running $9.99 a six-pack at the time.

Blackstone St. Charles Porter pours to a dark brownish to light black color with a medium sized, very creamy head of foam and a light roasty, coffeeish nose. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body with a light roast character, hints of toasted nuts and light coffee. The beer finishes dry roasty and makes you want another sip.

This is a brown porter and should be soft and easy drinking as a result. It is, and I like it very much.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
