Watch out! This beer has a bite to it! Or so the name
implies, at any rate. Black Widow Bock is brewed by the New Hampshire Custom
Brewers (NHCB from this point forth), and this small microbrewer has an
interesting David and Goliath story behind it. About a year and a half ago,
the brewer filed for bankruptcy protection. They didn't just head off to
bankruptcy court and accept their fate however; the owners challenged the
state of New Hampshire's distribution system along the way. In New
Hampshire, a brewery must sell it's products to a beer distributor, who then
sells the beer to taverns and retail beer sellers. NHCB maintained that
their beer was not effectively promoted or serviced at the retail level by
their distributors, who they claim are more interested in selling more
popular beers the likes of Bud. Since the state laws preclude them from
distributing their beer directly, they argue that the existing laws leave
them at a great disadvantage and have caused them to lose money in their
operations.
So far, score one for the little guy. NHCB has won the right to self
distribute their own beers. They are contract brewing beers to increase
their revenue, and have recently introduced new beers, one of which is the
Black Widow Bock. This is a deep copper colored brew with a generous head
formation and a sweet malty nose. The palate is rich and chewy, somewhat
toasty from the use of Munich malt, and has a slightly warming, slightly
sweet finish, warm with alcohol from it's 7% by volume content.
A delicious beer with pork or turkey, or even a rich caramel dessert. Though
this beer might be hard to find in your beer store if you live outside New
Hampshire or Massachusetts, you can order it or any other NHCB brew directly
from their website at http://www.nhbrews.com/obeer.html. Why not buy some
and help the little guy?
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
