So, a couple of years ago when I was in Nashville, I was really impressed with a growler of The Rose Belgian Style Blonde Ale I picked up at Wild Hare Beer Company. I liked the beer so much in fact (and the medieval theme of the brewery), that I vowed that the next time I was in Nashville, I would pay them a visit.
So, the bad news is that although I was in Nashville again for Christmas of 2017, I didn’t get to pay Black Abbey a visit. We arrived on Christmas Eve, you see, and left for home early the day after Christmas. The goiod news, though, is that Black Abbey is now canning, and so I bought a few singles at Wild Hare and grabbed a six-pack of their IPA at Kroger.
One
of the singles I bought was Black Abbey The Forty Four Porter Brewed with
Coffee. Black Abbey has a limited release POTUS line of beers, and they
have released two saisons called Potus (POTUS 3 and POTUS 7), as well as a
coffee porter named POTUS 44. POTUS 44 appears to have been the most
popular, and has been released in cans as a regular offering under the name
The Forty Four. If you look at the POTUS beers sequentially, they are named
for Jefferson, Jackson, and Obama.
From the website:
A robust porter liberally infused with an exclusive blend of Hawaiian and Kenyan coffee beans from our friends at Frothy Monkey. The cold-brewed coffee enhances the natural roast aroma, and pulls deep notes of chocolate and caramel. Pairs well with cozy movie nights; smoked or barbecued meats and cheesecake.
Black Abbey The Forty Four has an alcohol content of 4.8% by volume with 25 IBUs. It was running $9.99 a six-pack at Kroger.
Black Abbey The Forty Four Porter Brewed with Coffee pours to a jet-black color with a thick creamy tan head that is short lived and a lightly roasty nose with coffee and subtle coffee grinds. Taking a sip, the beer has a smooth medium body with lovely licorice notes, a hint of subtle smoke, chocolate, coffee and a dry roasty malty and coffeeish finish. The coffee may be best appreciated in the finish, but it is remarkable throughout.
A very nicely done beer indeed. I can easily see why Black Abbey chose this to be one of their first four canned brews. Now I want to go to visit them more than ever. And hey, we're all excited to see what POTUS 45 will be like. I hear that one will be brewed with covfefe.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
