Augustiner Edelstoff
Review Date 8/15/2025 By John Staradumsky
Augustiner Bräu München! Did you know they are Munich’s oldest privately owned brewery? They are! That also means they are one of the only breweries in Germany that can brew a true Oktoberfest beer. Sadly, I’ve never been able to find that brew, but I am on the hunt. Augustiner was founded in 1328, just shy now of 700 years ago, and they are one of the original Munich breweries along with Spaten (now owned by AB Inbev), Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr (now owned by Paulaner), and Höfbrau.
It's no secret that Augustiner Maximator is one of my favorite beers in all the world. That’s saying something, because so far I’ve tried over 8000 different beers (8048 at the moment, to be precise). Still, Augustiner makes many more fine beers, one of them being the delightful Edelstoff, in the Dortmunder Export style.
Augustiner says about Edestoff:
Unser Edelstoff erhält seinen glanzklaren Ausdruck durch das leuchtende Strohgelb. Die Frische kommt mit dem reinen Geruch, den blumigen Anklängen folgen weiche Malzaromen im Geruch. Durch die lang anhaltende Lagerzeit ist der milde und ausgeprägte Körper des Edelstoffs attraktiv spritzig. Das Bier besitzt eine ausgewogene Süße und ist mit hopfenbitteren Nuancen versetzt.
Which means, if you don’t speak German:
Our noble brew gets its brilliant clarity through the bright straw, yellow color. The nose offers a fresh scent, followed by soft malt aromas and floral notes. Due to the long-lasting maturation period, the mild and pronounced body of the noble brew is attractively crisp. The beer has a balanced sweetness and is accented with hoppy bitter nuances.
Augustiner Edelstoff has an alcohol content of 5.6% by volume and I paid $16.99 for a six-pack at Total Wine, which is a pretty hefty price for six 11.2 ounce bottles of beer. I should note that the price has increased a few bucks this year since Donald Trump slapped his ridiculous tariffs on our European allies. My bottles have no freshness daying but are super fresh tasting.
Augustiner Edelstoff pours to a brilliant golden color with a thick fluffy white head and a nose of freshly baked bread and gentle earthy hops. Taking a sip, the beer is as bready malty as the nose promised, except here it’s fresh baked bread with the crusts on. The beer finishes dry with a bitter grassy herbal earthy hop kiss. There’s a hint of lemon zest here, too.
The balance between malt and hops here is absolutely sublime, and makes me want another one. You want one, too. You just know you do, and when you head to your local packy to pick some up, tell them the brew guru sent you.
Glad I tried it?

Would I rebuy it??
