Couple of new things at Taco Mac! First, they’re pouring beers from the Atwater Brewery of Detroit, Michigan. That’s really cool because I’ve been wanting to try a few of their beers, Lebkuchen Christmas Ale and Winter Bock for many years now. Perhaps they’ll be sold here in Georgia this winter. For now, though, I’m hoisting an Atwater Conniption Fit Double IPA, and what a tasty beer it is indeed.

The other new thing is the nooner glass at Taco Mac. They’re called nooners because, well, they’re 5 ounces in size and a couple of them at noon with your lunch shouldn’t keep you from making it back to the office on time. Initially, they were also worth a full credit towards your Brewniversity studies, though recently they were demoted to a half credit. Still, that’s not a bad deal, and it’s nice that you can ask your server for several at a time if you so desire. Building your own flight from 100 different drafts is a noble idea indeed.

Taco Mac kicked off the nooner with Atwater Conniption Fit here in Canton. Although you can get any beer in a nooner, they made it a point to promote it with Atwater Conniption Fit, featuring it both as a normal selection in an 11-ounce glass and as the Atwater Conniption Fit Nooner.

Here’s what the brewery says about the beer:

Conniption Fit features an aggressive overlay of American hops in the bitter, flavor, aroma and finish. Remarkably balanced and clean for a high gravity outing. C20 adds slight sweetness in front.

Double, or Imperial, IPA’s are American descendants of the English Style that feature higher alcohol volumes and overt American hop varietals.

Atwater Conniption Fit Double IPA has an alcohol content of 8% by volume according to Taco Mac (9% per the brewery website) with 91 IBUs. I paid $2 for my nooner; an 11-ounce glass will run you $4.75, which is a pretty good price these days. Total Wine sells Atwater Conniption Fit for $8.99 a 4-pack.

My nooner of Atwater Conniption Fit Double IPA arrived a dark deep amber in color with a thin head forming on a 5-ounce pour and an herbal tea and pine nose. Taking a sip, the beer has caramel malt appearing up front then earthy, herbal hop aroma followed by a little resiny hops. The beer is very bitter with grapefruit rind at the last.

This is a tasty beer indeed, and while normally I like more than a taster to fully consider a beer, Atwater Conniption Fit is bursting with so much hop and malt flavor I can easily call this one a winner. Yeah, I’ll be having another Conniption Fit for sure folks.
