It’s amazing how
strange life can be sometimes. As a beer enthusiast, I travel far and wide
looking for new and exciting beers to try. Since moving to Georgia from
Rhode Island some four and a half years ago, I’ve been all over the state of
Georgia, to North and South Carolina, to Florida, Tennessee and Louisiana
looking for beer.
And somehow, through all of that, I let a gem of a local brew slip right
through my fingers. Yes my friends, tonight while out enjoying a few pints I
managed to taste my first sample of Red Brick Summer Brew.
Should I be surprised how good this beer is? Atlanta Brewing, makers of Red
Brick, has a German brewmaster who makes an excellent flagship beer,
Red Brick Ale in
the Alt style. Then too, their recent
Winter Brew was a
delightfully sinful chocolate oatmeal porter.
Here in Georgia, Sweetwater dominates the local beer craft beer scene. I
long favored the now defunct Dogwood over them, and to some degree, Atlanta
Brewing is taking up the mantle when it comes to brewing the most
interesting beers. Reference the Summer Brew:
Red Brick Summer Brew is a traditional Hefeweizen style beer. We use
traditional Hefeweizen yeast that imparts the beautiful flavor and aroma,
reminiscent of summer itself. Unfiltered to keep the unique character of the
yeast intact. Golden and nearly opaque, this classic summer beer is
beautiful in a tall slender glass. Garnish with a slice of lemon or orange
on the rim of your glass.
Try a locally brewed fresh Hefeweizen and see why so many Germans are moving
to Atlanta!
And this really is an authentic German-style weissbier. So many American
wheat beers today are lacking in the classic German characteristics. And
that’s fine; it makes them American as opposed to German in style.
But it’s refreshing to try a classic German wheat beer, and Red Brick Summer
brew surely is that. My glass of Red Brick Summer Brew arrived a pale
whitish yellow in color with a thick spritzy head formation and a distinctly
clove laden nose.
The palate is tart and crisp with lots of refreshing wheat character. Far
from one-dimensional, this beer is packed with clove and banana notes and
even a hint of luxurious vanilla. Red Brick Summer finishes with a
refreshing wheat tartness and a stronger hop bitterness than most beers in
the style. All in all an excellent Hefeweizen and a summer seasonal not to
be missed. Perfect for hot Georgia springs and summers.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
