Aslin Beer Company-the mystery beer company! At least, they’re a mystery to me. If you go the beers page on their website, it says “Because of a recent discrepancy between to regulatory agencies, Aslin Beer Co. has decided to alleviate some of the issue by closing the taproom and tasting room.” And a few other things, but there is no list of their beers.
So, we’ll talk about an emerging craze in the beer world, “New England Style IPAs” instead. Simply put, these are unfiltered and hazy, and usually feature a bright citrusy aroma and flavor, like the sun trying to peak through on a cloudy day. They are not as thin malty as some of today’s hop juice IPAs, but they are not as malty as classic American IPA. Aslin Champion of the Sun India Pale Ale is in this “style”.
I am told that beer geeks line up to get growler fills from Aslin. I did like Champion of the Sun, but I do not stand in lines for beer. There are just way too many great beers out there to do that. I would much rather spend my time at Taco Mac, sitting down for beer. At the bar. Where the only lines are draft lines.
Aslin Champion of the Sun India Pale Ale has an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume. I got a can from the one and only Chuck Triplett. My can is stamped Troll Toll 02/07/17 14:13:19 which I assume is the packaging date. I drank it on March 26th. Craig M on Untappd said it was “Not bad for 2 months old”. What are we coming to when 60 days is an old IPA?
Aslin Champion of the Sun India Pale Ale pours to a hazy orange color with a thick fluffy white head and a zesty grapefruit rind nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a crisp light maltiness up front followed by leafy spearmint hop notes and more vibrant grapefruit pith and peel, all leading into a bitter citric herbal finish.
I liked this beer very much, and it reminded me of Three Taverns Supernal IPA, in the same style and with the same citrus blast and minty leafy hop character.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
