One of the reasons I subscribe to beer of
the month clubs, and find them to be well worth the average expense of $25 a
month or so for 12 beers shipped is that you often receive beers that you
might not otherwise try. This is the case for me with this particular beer,
which I just received today. Though I have sampled about 2400 different
beers so far in my beer drinking career, I am ashamed to say that this is
the first Arkansas-brewed beer I have come across so far. Actually, that
shouldn't surprise me, since brewing after prohibition has only been legal
in the state since 1991.
Weidman's Old Fort Brewpub is Arkansas's one and only, and is located in
Fort Smith. They built their brewpub in the old Joseph Knoble Brewery that
dates back to 1848.
Arkansas Ale is light golden in color, an extra pale ale to be sure. There's
a big and long lasting light foamy head on this brew, probably some wheat
used in the mash. The nose is lightly malty, like sticking your nose into a
mash tun. The palate is fresh, crisp, and packed with pale malt and just a
touch of fruit yet still very light and drinkable. There aren't a lot of
hops to speak of, but the beer is balanced and refreshing. All in all, a
perfect beer for hot Arkansas weather.
