There has been a good bit of discussion about this beer
lately, and as irony would have it, I found some in a liquor store in
Somerville, Massachusetts this weekend. It was bottled March 13 of this
year, so it's fairly fresh, and I didn't see it for sale in six-packs (only
in fat, stubby 22's shaped like any other Anchor bottle, but bigger.)
This is certainly a light bodied beer from the get go. It is light golden
color with decent head formation and a very crisp, wheaty nose. Not
surprising, the beer is made with 65% wheat malt. That gives Anchor Wheat a
crisp, clean flavor with a subtle biscuit character and a refreshing,
slightly tart finish.
Considering Anchor's reputation for bold beers, this one might be a surprise
to some, but should be appreciated for it's delicate palate and suitability
for hot-weather quenching. A delicious beer that I will certainly buy again.
This is a quaffing beer, and is suitable for matching with just about any
cuisine. I like it best after a long walk on a hot summer day, by itself or
perhaps with a slice of lemon.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
