This is the first Allagash beer I have seen in stores in 750ml corked bottles. I knew they were coming, as I had seen them at the RI Beer Expo, but I had forgotten about them until I saw the bottles on the shelves this week. This bottle is from Batch # 1, it comes in at 7% alcohol by volume and has a tag around the neck describing the beer and brewery and offering more information at www.allagash.com or by calling 1-800-330-5385.
Pours to a dark brown color, big foamy-rocky tan head, big malty-yeasty nose. Palate is rich with subtle chocolate, firm malt body, yeasty Belgian horse-blanket notes. Finish is warming, slightly tilting to the sweet side, rich and rewarding. Damn fine beer, a wonderful find in your stocking, and as good as anything I've had from Unibroue or Ommegang! Fine praise indeed!
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
