Wasn’t so long ago that “Session IPA”, the style that is not a style, was all the rage. That one was really more of a substyle, and it certainly wasn’t IPA. More like American Pale Ale. Those beers are still out there, but the fad has faded as all afds do in favor of hazy, juicy unfiltered “New England IPAs”. I will admit I like this substyle quite a bit, and I was very impressed indeed with AleSmith Broken Filter Unfiltered India Pale Ale, a collaboration with Beachwood brewing of Long Beach, California.
This appears to be a draft only specialty beer from AleSmith, and there is little information available on it. I am glad some of it made its way to Georgia where I picked some up from Stout’s Growlers. AleSmith Broken Filter Unfiltered India Pale Ale has an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume and it was running $11 for 32-ounces at Stouts.
AleSmith Broken Filter Unfiltered India Pale Ale pours to a super hazy orange color with a medium head of creamy foam and an orange juicy, herbal minty nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a medium maltiness with a solid citrus juiciness, it’s packed with orange and grapefruit rind and minty herbal leafy notes. It finishes with notes of leafy spearmint and wintergreen and lingers long dry and bitter on the palate.
I found this beer to be irresistibly drinkable and simply delicious.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
