Who loves horchata? Doesn’t everybody? I think they do. Horchata, of course, is a Latin beverage that can be made from nuts or milk or rice with varying spices, but usually cinnamon and often vanilla. I’ve only ever had one horchata beer before, Blue Moon Cinnamon Horchata Ale, a pale beer with horchata spice. Now comes number two, Abita Horchata Turbodog, which juxtaposes horchata spice onto the classic Abita Turbodog Ale (a porter).
I surely love Turbodog, so this was definitely a beer I wanted to seek out. When I tried the Blue Moon Horchata beer, I enjoyed it bu could not help thinking how interesting the spices might be against a dark beer. Abita Horchata Turbodog is the answer to that question.
From the label:
Horchata Turbodog is based on one of Abita’s most popular brews, with a definite Latin twist. This robust dark ale is brewed with pale, caramel and chocolate malts, then fresh cinnamon sticks and vanilla beans are added during aging giving it a traditional horchata flavor. This gives the brew a rich body, dark color and deep flavors of chocolate, toffee, cinnamon and vanilla.
Ingredients from the website:
Yeast: German Ale
Malt: Pale, Caramel and Chocolate
Hops: Willamette
Abita Horchata Turbo Dog has an alcohol content of 6% by volume with 26 IBUs. I paid just $5.69 for a 22-ounce bottle at Target.
Abita Horchata Turbo Dog pours to a dark brown color with a thick creamy tan head and a soft cookie malt and cinnamon nose. Taking a sip, the beer has soft cookie like malt notes with a light underlining note of vanilla and more pronounced spicy cinnamon. Finishes a tad roasty and spiced with cinnamon.
Nutty and chocolatey, spicy, low in price, what’s not to like? Try this one, you’re sure to like it.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
