One of the reasons I haven’t made it out of Canton in a while (in search of beer anyway) is that I have this problem. You see, there’s a Taco Mac just around the corner from my home, only 3 miles away, and they have over 100 beers on tap. And they keep putting great beers on that keep me coming back for more.
We bought this house back in March of 2010, and got a great deal on it. It seemed too good to be true at the time, a wonderful home at a great price, and a Taco Mac right around the corner. Now, a year and a half later, I think I know why. I am convinced that the folks at Taco Mac slipped the realtor a bribe to get me into the neighborhood. I say this because I sometimes feel like I’ve spent more money at Taco Mac than I paid for my home. That said, I have enjoyed lots of great beers at Taco Mac, beers like Abita Honey Rye Ale.
Abita Honey Rye is part of the “Abita Select” series of beers. These are special limited-time productions that are available only on draft. So, when I saw that this one was on tap at Taco Mac, I jumped all over it. Here’s what Abita says about the brew:
Our Honey Rye Ale is made with pale, wheat, and rye malts. It also has a blend of four different caramel malts. We used 20% rye malt to give the beer a very good rye flavor and aroma. The extra rye also gives a fuller mouthfeel to the beer. We added a generous amount of wildflower honey as well. This gives the beer a sweet aroma and flavor. We used Willamette hops, but the beer is not very bitter and has very little hop aroma. This allows the flavors of the rye and honey to come through. The result is a full bodied, sweet, and malty beer.
And here’s what I say:
My mug of Abita Select Honey Rye Ale arrived a hazy orange amber in color with a thin creamy head formation and a subtle but noticeably grainy rye nose. Taking a sip, the spicy rye hits you right off the bat followed by a decided honey richness and sweetness. Both are in balance, though, and a gentle kiss of grassy hops balance the beer nicely in the finish. Overall, I love the peppery spiciness and balance of this beer. It’s smooth, flavorful, and very drinkable. Even a little warming at 7% alcohol by volume.
Surely enough character for the veteran beer drinker, yet it won’t scare away the newbie.If you see this on tap, you’ll want to try it.
