The Fluffernutter! Isn’t that a New England thing? I always thought it was, and I was right! Marshmallow Fluff has been produced by the Durkee Mower Company of Lynn, Massachusetts since around 1917 (thanks to Wikipedia for that date), and New Englanders have been making sandwiches from this and peanut butter almost ever since. Growing up in New England, I can tell you I ate a lot of Fluffernutters; indeed they were an essential part of my childhood.

Imagine my surprise, then, when the first Fluffernutter beer that I have come across was NOT brewed by a New England brewery, but by the Abita Brewery of Abita Springs, Louisiana. I guess I should not be that surprised since Abita has brewed more than its share of theme beers in their day. Knowing that Abita has been around a while and is a quality operation, I took a bit of comfort in the fact that Abita Fluffernutter White Stout was going to be a good beer. I wasn’t wrong there.

Abita says:

Brewed with milk sugar, vanilla, and peanut flavor, this sweet golden ale boasts a creamy mouthfeel layered with flavors of toasted malt and notes of marshmallow and peanut butter.

Abita Fluffernutter White Stout has an alcohol content of 8% by volume with 15 IBUs and I paid $2.99 for a single at Total Wine, where it was selling for $12.99 a six-pack. A fair price these days I think. Abita calls it a “white stout”. I do not believe such things exist. I categorize in the nut beer category. Should you think differently, have at it.

Abita Fluffernutter White Stout pours to a bright orange color with a thick fluffy white head and a nose of roasted nuts and vanilla. Taking a sip the beer is medium in body, immediately popping with roasty nuts and marshmallow. You do get the fluffernutter theme if you try, though it’s more whole peanuts than peanut butter. The beer finishes slightly sweet but not overly so.

Marshmallow up front and nuts in the warming finish deliver the theme, and I enjoyed the beer. I would certainly buy it again, perhaps on tap at Taco Mac. This also makes an interesting companion beer to Abita PB & Jams Peanut Butter and Jelly Lager.

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
