Spiced Chevre Noir Black Saison
Review Date 3/26/2018 By John Staradumsky
Yay! It was my birthday, and the wife sprung a great little present on me. Knowing my love for pub crawls but aversion to drinking and driving (everyone should have an aversion to drinking and driving), my Beloved Barbara™ gave me a $100 gift card for a pub crawl and another $100 Lyft gift card to get there and back again (just like the book by Bilbo Baggins).
Where to go first? That was an easy decision: Abbey of the Holy Goats in Roswell. There were a few reasons for this:
· First brewery in Georgia established entirely by women
· Specializing in Belgian style ales
· I had sampled one of their beers a week before at a beer fest
· Abbey of the Holy Goats is a totally cool name
So there you go. That was easy! Abbey of the Holy Goats is located in an office complex in Roswell about 17 miles from my home. They open at 2PM on Saturday, and the fare on Lyft at the time was about $20 (I added a $5 tip). Upon arrival and entry, I ordered a sampler of four of their beers. Flights of four 5-ounce samples ran $8, and pints would cost you $6.
The last of the four beers in my sampler was my favorite beer here: Spiced Chevre Noir Black Saison. This is their Christmas brew and they have some left over apparently as I was sipping on St. Patrick's Day. I know it's their Christmas Brew because the draft menu says:
Black saison. Medium body brew/Christmas spices.
I mean, you can put Christmas spices in your beer any time of year, but when you call then out as Christmas spices, there's a damned good chance that that's a Christmas beer.
A pair of gals were sitting across from me and sipping and sniffing this beer, and didn't know quite what to make of it. They were getting...something, they knew, but were not sure quite what they were getting.
I told them what I was getting.
"German Pfeffernusse cookies," I said.
"That's it!" one cried out, eyes gone wide with revelation. She called them something else and told her companion some family member had made them before. I was happy to help. Beer identification is just one of the many services we provide here at Bruguru.com.
Abbey of the Holy Goats Spiced Chevre Noir has an alcohol content of 7% by volume and is a taproom exclusive. Get it while you can.
Spiced Chèvre Noir has a nose that explodes with anise, is smooth and gently roasty in palate with more rich anise, ginger, clove, cardamom and nutmeg. Dry spicy finish. Best beer so far, pfeffernusse in a glass. I gotta go back and get a growler if they have any left.
Glad I tried it? T
Would I rebuy it??
