Sierra Nevada Dankful IPA

Review Date 10/10/2020   By John Staradumsky

There I was, standing in the beer aisle at Total Wine (where else would I be while at Total Wine, I mean really!) when I saw it: Sierra Nevada Dankful IPA. I had seen this beer in that most august of beer groups, Honest Craft Beer Reviews, you see, but as it is fairly new I had not tried it yet. I knew I wanted to, though, so when I saw it, in my cart it went.

“Dank” IPAs are the in thing these days, the latest fad in the IPA world, which itself is a long running fad in the beer world. Rest assured, IPAs have been around for centuries, so are not a fad per se, but in the United States they certainly are the most hyped and popular of beer styles. I am not so sure about “dank” IPAs, although I do like them. For me, they emphasize dark resins and leafy vegetal notes, among other traits.

Sierra Nevada says:

Craft beer brings people together—to share memories, to celebrate today, to imagine the future. A better tomorrow is why we brew Dankful, a resinous West Coast IPA that helps fund the philanthropic work of our Sierra Nevada foundation. Our employee-managed foundation supports nonprofits that stand up for social equality, economic well-being, and environmental protection. We're Dankful for that.

Ingredients from the website:

Malts: Two-row Pale, Caramelized malts, Rye

Hops: Columbus, Chinook, Mosaic, Ekuanot, Nelson Sauvin, Zappa, Idaho 7

Sierra Nevada Dankful IPA has an alcohol content of 7.4% by volume with 55 IBUs. I paid $9.99 for my six-pack. My six-pack carrier is stamped PKGD 09/11/20 and I drank my first can on 10/08/20, less than a month later.

Sierra Nevada Dankful IPA pours to a bright orange color with a thick creamy head of foam and a dank herbal hop nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a medium caramel maltiness, firmer in body than most these days, and I like that. The hops permeate, earthy herbal, a little resiny, a little green leafy vegetal, and ending with a gently bitter finish.

Very nice indeed, I’m Dankful to Sierre Nevada for brewing it, and Dankful I found some. Why not try it yourself? I’m sure you will be Dankful, too.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
