Yay! It’s Atlanta Beer Week! That means lots of stuff going on concerning beer here in the ATL, though sadly for me I have this work thing going on and I’ve really not the time to appreciate much of it. If you want to see what’s going on, you really have to check with some of our local breweries to see what’s up, as there’s not a really central place to see a listing. Then too, there are non-local breweries taking part in the fun, one of which is New York’s Southern Tier. Southern Tier Zero Mile is an annual specialty draft made just for Atlanta Beer Week, and for 2016 they’ve cooked up a lovely Munich Dunkels. Yum!
The name "Zero Mile" is derived from the famous stone marker from the 19th century that served to highlight the end of the line for the Western and Atlantic Railroad in what would become Atlanta.
For 2016, Southern Tier has another great beer for Georgia beer lovers, brewed especially for Taco Mac. I'll let Taco Mac tell you about it.
We jump at the chance to experiment on a new beer using our 30bbl pilot system. That’s why it was our pleasure to welcome the guys from Taco Mac and Atlanta Beverage to brew this batch just for Atlanta Beer Week. The guys were here with us from start to end of the batch & they got their hands dirty just to bring something extra special back south with them.
Malts used are two row, white wheat, cara 8 and oats per the website. They say three hops are used but only list Cascade and Willamette. Agave, lime and ginger are also used.
Southern Tier Zero Mile 2016 has an alcohol content of 5.4% by volume with 16 IBUs. I paid just $5 for a 20-ounce mug. Nice!
My mug of Southern Tier Zero Mile 2016 arrived a bright orange color with a thick spritzy short-lived head and an explosive citrus lime and agave nose. Taking a sip, the beer is tart wheaty in the palate with a hint of caramel, bitter lime pith and peel, bright juicy tangerine fruit, vegetal agave, subtle spicy ginger and a tart wheaty and bitter finish. What a beauty folks, the citrus fruit is insane!
What will they cook up for 2017? I'll be back to tell you in about a year.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
