I’m a big fan of The Green Man brewery of Asheville, North Carolina. So, when I saw four-packs of their Trickster IPA at Target, I picked one up. I didn’t know much about the beer but the pint cans were attractively labeled and, hey, it’s Green Man. It’s got to be good, right?
A few days later, I popped one open to find out. Green Man does not say much about the beer, but they do say this on their website:
This unfiltered tropical fruit forward IPA gives off notes of pineapple, peach, and watermelon. Smooth with medium bitterness and just enough malt backbone to support the hops. Brewed with pale malt and dry hopped with 2lbs. per barrel of El Dorado and Simcoe.
The label says Mosaics are used as well.
Green Man Trickster IPA has an alcohol content of 7% by volume with 76 IBUs. I paid $9.49 for 4 16-ounce cans at Target.
Green Man Trickster IPA pours to a pale orange color with a moderate head formation and a soft tropical fruit nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a light maltiness with tropical notes of passion fruit and papaya and a hint of citrus rind. Finishes with a balancing bitterness. Tasty enough, but not my favorite beer from Green Man. It could use more juiciness and definitely more malt. If you like these thin malty beers this one might just be for you, but to me it seems too thin malty, even for the style.
Not a beer I would buy again. Never fear, however, there are plenty more Green man beers that I would.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
